The album represents a significant stylistic shift for the band. After two albums of slightly more conventional punk and glam-influenced rock, Systems of Romance fully embraced synthesizers and a darker, more futuristic electronic sound. The album was produced by the German producer Conny Plank (known for his work with Kraftwerk and Neu!), and was recorded at his studio outside Cologne.
